Narrative:

Prior to takeoff we briefed the noise abatement procedures for a runway 8 departure. We were cleared for a noise abatement procedure takeoff and a subsequent turn to the northwest. During clean-up, the first officer (PF) started a left turn since his DME read 15 NM, 13.5 DME was required, and delay of the turn would make a terrain conflict likely. My DME read 11.5 at the time, then both DME's failed in the turn. I believe we initiated the turn 2 mi early based on my DME and looking out the window. Better to risk being noisy than being too close to rapidly rising terrain further east.

Title: B727 CREW TURNED AWAY FROM HIGH TERRAIN AFTER HAVING CONFLICTING DME READINGS AND THEN DME DROP OUT ON BOTH SIDES.

Narrative: PRIOR TO TKOF WE BRIEFED THE NOISE ABATEMENT PROCS FOR A RWY 8 DEP. WE WERE CLRED FOR A NOISE ABATEMENT PROC TKOF AND A SUBSEQUENT TURN TO THE NW. DURING CLEAN-UP, THE FO (PF) STARTED A L TURN SINCE HIS DME READ 15 NM, 13.5 DME WAS REQUIRED, AND DELAY OF THE TURN WOULD MAKE A TERRAIN CONFLICT LIKELY. MY DME READ 11.5 AT THE TIME, THEN BOTH DME'S FAILED IN THE TURN. I BELIEVE WE INITIATED THE TURN 2 MI EARLY BASED ON MY DME AND LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW.
