Narrative:

Taxi to runway 23 for takeoff. We were taxiing from central deice pad to runway 23 via txwys east and H. As you head north on taxiway H, it apparently ends at taxiway Q, or makes a 60 degree left turn to the approach end of runway 23 (I am still not sure). As we called tower ready for takeoff, tower informed us we needed special permission to use runway 23 full length for departure as we had taxied onto taxiway Q and this encroaches into runway 23 safety zone. I had stopped short of runway 23 at the corner as I did not see any hold short lines and believed they were still in front of me. There was no traffic conflict as we were #1 for takeoff and runway 23 was not being used for lndgs. I missed the sign for taxiway H and taxiway Q intersection, if there is one. There are several areas of cyyz that have confusing signage and this is one that needs immediate attention. (Could also be result of lighting inoperative on signs.)
