Narrative:

On aircraft XXX flight crew reported that flying in navigation (FMC) mode first officer's HSI CDI needle froze with navigation flag in view (intermittently). I was able to duplicate problem on ground and verified problem was due to a bad HSI (needle/flag intermittently sticking). I removed the faulty HSI to gain access to air carrier port #XXXX HSI which I found was not in stock at ZZZ. I made numerous calls to our maintenance control foreman in ZZZ1, but was unable to get anyone. I notified the maintenance tower coordinator here in ZZZ of the situation and he said he would get proper authority/authorized to rob an HSI from another aircraft. I gave him the air carrier part number XXXX and continued to work the 4 other aircraft that currently had avionics write-ups. Later I was contacted by our maintenance tower coordinator with authority/authorized of our maintenance duty manager to rob the first officer's HSI from aircraft YYY. I was also given a rob authority/authorized control number issued by the maintenance duty manager with stores (the department responsible for parts). I removed the part from aircraft YYY, made a logbook entry - first officer's HSI removed for XXX and completed the robbed part tag. I installed and completed a satisfactory operational check of the first officer's HSI on XXX and removed the aircraft from CAT ii/IIIA per our mpp procedures. Please note there was no air carrier part placard on the robbed HSI and I had to use the manufacturer serial number for the installation paperwork. The aircraft was then dispatched for revenue service. I was notified 3 days later the part removed from aircraft YYY was the wrong effectivity for aircraft XXX and was later replaced with part number XXXX that I originally requested.
