Narrative:

It was my first captain trip for an air carrier. Everything was going smoothly and on time. We taxied out to runway 9 at mci. The first officer switched to tower. We were then cleared into position and hold. We completed the before takeoff check and I then began to add power. The engines had not yet stabilized but the aircraft began to roll. Tower then advised 'cancel your takeoff.' my first officer then advised canceling takeoff. I began to abort the takeoff. Tower then advised, 'air carrier X, you had not been cleared for takeoff.' we responded 'roger.' tower advised, 'taxi back to the end and call when ready.' we taxied clear and taxied back and was again cleared for a normal takeoff and an uneventful flight.
