Narrative:

Near midair collision. A cessna checking power lines through the traffic pattern flew too close to arriving traffic on runway 17C. Cessna was '03' co-altitude flying a 90 degree intercept to the final for runway 17C. He was so close I thought we would hit him. The first officer was flying the approach and did not see him, so he continued with the approach. I suggest that a larger space be created for him to check the power lines so we can avoid these near misses in the future. The cessna has his attention on checking the power lines and our attention is on landing traffic ahead clearing the runway, crossing traffic clearing the runway and monitoring our first officer's. The tower called the traffic out to flts behind us and only called the cessna out to flight XXX after I had received a traffic alert from the TCASII.

Title: MD80 CREW HAD NMAC WITH PWR LINE PATROL ACFT IN DFW CLASS B AIRSPACE.

Narrative: NMAC. A CESSNA CHKING PWR LINES THROUGH THE TFC PATTERN FLEW TOO CLOSE TO ARRIVING TFC ON RWY 17C. CESSNA WAS '03' CO-ALT FLYING A 90 DEG INTERCEPT TO THE FINAL FOR RWY 17C. HE WAS SO CLOSE I THOUGHT WE WOULD HIT HIM. THE FO WAS FLYING THE APCH AND DID NOT SEE HIM, SO HE CONTINUED WITH THE APCH. I SUGGEST THAT A LARGER SPACE BE CREATED FOR HIM TO CHK THE PWR LINES SO WE CAN AVOID THESE NEAR MISSES IN THE FUTURE. THE CESSNA HAS HIS ATTN ON CHKING THE PWR LINES AND OUR ATTN IS ON LNDG TFC AHEAD CLRING THE RWY, XING TFC CLRING THE RWY AND MONITORING OUR FO'S. THE TWR CALLED THE TFC OUT TO FLTS BEHIND US AND ONLY CALLED THE CESSNA OUT TO FLT XXX AFTER I HAD RECEIVED A TFC ALERT FROM THE TCASII.
