Narrative:

On base turn to final at cvg airport, first officer was flying. We were still at 250 KTS and hadn't been slowed by ATC. In a r-hand turn, approach asked if we had the airport and the first officer said no. We were given clearance to intercept the localizer (runway 18R), but due to our high speed and a strong west wind, we overshot final, almost to runway 18L. Approach asked if we had the rj about 1000 ft above us turning final to runway 18L and I had already seen the aircraft. We reported the aircraft and airport in sight and approach cleared us for the visual to runway 18R and to switch to tower. Rest of approach and landing were uneventful. I was allowing the first officer to fly fast to see how well he would handle it as there seemed to be no traffic to worry about. I should have prompted him to slow earlier, even if not prompted by approach control. There was no conflict, but if the WX had been IFR, we could have had one.

Title: FO OVERSHOT FINAL CREATING CONFLICT WITH ANOTHER ACFT TURNING FINAL TO THE ADJACENT PARALLEL RWY.

Narrative: ON BASE TURN TO FINAL AT CVG ARPT, FO WAS FLYING. WE WERE STILL AT 250 KTS AND HADN'T BEEN SLOWED BY ATC. IN A R-HAND TURN, APCH ASKED IF WE HAD THE ARPT AND THE FO SAID NO. WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC TO INTERCEPT THE LOC (RWY 18R), BUT DUE TO OUR HIGH SPD AND A STRONG W WIND, WE OVERSHOT FINAL, ALMOST TO RWY 18L. APCH ASKED IF WE HAD THE RJ ABOUT 1000 FT ABOVE US TURNING FINAL TO RWY 18L AND I HAD ALREADY SEEN THE ACFT. WE RPTED THE ACFT AND ARPT IN SIGHT AND APCH CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL TO RWY 18R AND TO SWITCH TO TWR. REST OF APCH AND LNDG WERE UNEVENTFUL. I WAS ALLOWING THE FO TO FLY FAST TO SEE HOW WELL HE WOULD HANDLE IT AS THERE SEEMED TO BE NO TFC TO WORRY ABOUT. I SHOULD HAVE PROMPTED HIM TO SLOW EARLIER, EVEN IF NOT PROMPTED BY APCH CTL. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT, BUT IF THE WX HAD BEEN IFR, WE COULD HAVE HAD ONE.
