Narrative:

During departure, we were given a clearance to intercept the 294 degree radial to decee then the WHWTR3 dec. My first officer was having trouble programming the FMS for the intercept when he said 'disregard what you are going to see.' I scanned the FMS to see what he was talking about and the aircraft passed through the assigned altitude of 6000 ft. I lowered the pitch attitude to 2 degrees below level flight attitude and the aircraft ballooned to 6350 ft before descending. At this time we were cleared to a higher altitude. There was no traffic or traffic conflicts and no comment from departure control.

Title: SETTING UP THE FMS FOR A NEW CLRNC IS GIVING THE FO DIFFICULTY. THE FLYING CAPT LOOKS TO SEE WHAT THE PROB IS. THIS DISTR CAUSES AN ALT OVERSHOT.

Narrative: DURING DEP, WE WERE GIVEN A CLRNC TO INTERCEPT THE 294 DEG RADIAL TO DECEE THEN THE WHWTR3 DEC. MY FO WAS HAVING TROUBLE PROGRAMMING THE FMS FOR THE INTERCEPT WHEN HE SAID 'DISREGARD WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO SEE.' I SCANNED THE FMS TO SEE WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT AND THE ACFT PASSED THROUGH THE ASSIGNED ALT OF 6000 FT. I LOWERED THE PITCH ATTITUDE TO 2 DEGS BELOW LEVEL FLT ATTITUDE AND THE ACFT BALLOONED TO 6350 FT BEFORE DSNDING. AT THIS TIME WE WERE CLRED TO A HIGHER ALT. THERE WAS NO TFC OR TFC CONFLICTS AND NO COMMENT FROM DEP CTL.
