Narrative:

On descent into jfk on the camrn arrival, I crossed camrn intersection at 14000 ft instead of the assigned altitude of 11000 ft. I was flying the STAR and centered on the 49 degree radial of sea isle. I misread the STAR and asked my copilot to tune 41 degrees into jfk VOR. He tuned in 41 degrees but selected the dpk VOR (proper for the arrival). I asked him to confirm that camrn was 37 DME off jfk VOR. He did confirm this for me. I continued the descent thinking I was reading DME off jfk VOR, instead of dpk VOR. Camrn is in fact 37 DME off jfk but 53 DME off dpk. When center called to ask our position (then 53 DME off dpk) I thought we still had 16 mi to reach our assigned crossing altitude. Center did not mention any conflicts. I am a new captain. I now know that I must double-check such questions myself before asking for concurrence. I also realize that I must ask for any information more clearly.

Title: B737-200 CREW DID NOT COMPLY WITH A STAR ALT XING RESTR ON THE CAMRN 4 INTO JFK.

Narrative: ON DSCNT INTO JFK ON THE CAMRN ARR, I CROSSED CAMRN INTXN AT 14000 FT INSTEAD OF THE ASSIGNED ALT OF 11000 FT. I WAS FLYING THE STAR AND CTRED ON THE 49 DEG RADIAL OF SEA ISLE. I MISREAD THE STAR AND ASKED MY COPLT TO TUNE 41 DEGS INTO JFK VOR. HE TUNED IN 41 DEGS BUT SELECTED THE DPK VOR (PROPER FOR THE ARR). I ASKED HIM TO CONFIRM THAT CAMRN WAS 37 DME OFF JFK VOR. HE DID CONFIRM THIS FOR ME. I CONTINUED THE DSCNT THINKING I WAS READING DME OFF JFK VOR, INSTEAD OF DPK VOR. CAMRN IS IN FACT 37 DME OFF JFK BUT 53 DME OFF DPK. WHEN CTR CALLED TO ASK OUR POS (THEN 53 DME OFF DPK) I THOUGHT WE STILL HAD 16 MI TO REACH OUR ASSIGNED XING ALT. CTR DID NOT MENTION ANY CONFLICTS. I AM A NEW CAPT. I NOW KNOW THAT I MUST DOUBLE-CHK SUCH QUESTIONS MYSELF BEFORE ASKING FOR CONCURRENCE. I ALSO REALIZE THAT I MUST ASK FOR ANY INFO MORE CLRLY.
