Narrative:

During initial climb out from lga, flight was cleared to 12000 ft MSL. Aircraft was being hand flown by first officer. Approaching level off, first officer engaged autoplt. Rate of climb was excessive at this time causing the autoplt to overshoot altitude. Captain and first officer intervened, aircraft reached approximately 12400 ft MSL before leveling at 12000 ft MSL. No conflicts, no corrective call from ATC. Human factors: first officer concentrating on accelerating from 250 KIAS to climb speed at time. Once established at climb speed, first officer engaged autoplt failing to recognize rate of climb in relation to leveloff altitude. Pilot fatigue due to early morning crew pick-up from hotel.

Title: A B757 FLT CREW NOTICES THAT THE AUTOPLT WAS NOT GOING TO CAPTURE ALT, SO THEY TURN OFF AUTOPLT BUT ACFT WAS 400 FT HIGH.

Narrative: DURING INITIAL CLBOUT FROM LGA, FLT WAS CLRED TO 12000 FT MSL. ACFT WAS BEING HAND FLOWN BY FO. APCHING LEVEL OFF, FO ENGAGED AUTOPLT. RATE OF CLB WAS EXCESSIVE AT THIS TIME CAUSING THE AUTOPLT TO OVERSHOOT ALT. CAPT AND FO INTERVENED, ACFT REACHED APPROX 12400 FT MSL BEFORE LEVELING AT 12000 FT MSL. NO CONFLICTS, NO CORRECTIVE CALL FROM ATC. HUMAN FACTORS: FO CONCENTRATING ON ACCELERATING FROM 250 KIAS TO CLB SPD AT TIME. ONCE ESTABLISHED AT CLB SPD, FO ENGAGED AUTOPLT FAILING TO RECOGNIZE RATE OF CLB IN RELATION TO LEVELOFF ALT. PLT FATIGUE DUE TO EARLY MORNING CREW PICK-UP FROM HOTEL.
