Narrative:

I was talking to approach control (austin). I was cleared for the visual approach to runway 17L, but never told to go to tower. Just as I was turing to final, my HSI tumbled, distracting me so that I did not notice I was not on tower frequency. As a result, I landed wihtout permission. I discovered the error when I went to switch to ground. I called the tower frequency to apologize, and the tower told me to go to ground and taxi to parking.

Title: A46 PLT LNDG AUS FAILED TO OBTAIN A LNDG CLRNC.

Narrative: I WAS TALKING TO APCH CTL (AUSTIN). I WAS CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 17L, BUT NEVER TOLD TO GO TO TWR. JUST AS I WAS TURING TO FINAL, MY HSI TUMBLED, DISTRACTING ME SO THAT I DID NOT NOTICE I WAS NOT ON TWR FREQ. AS A RESULT, I LANDED WIHTOUT PERMISSION.
