Narrative:

Received ATIS which stated that the first 1000 ft of runway was closed. Upon landing at gtf, we noticed that the chevrons preceded runway by what we thought to be the first 1000 ft. We touched down on the numbers and were immediately asked if we received ATIS and why didn't we comply with first 1000 ft closure. We explained our understanding of the ATIS, but our response didn't seem adequate and the controller didn't want to discuss it further. It wasn't until we took off on the same runway that we saw a faint yellow line running across the runway that we assumed was the 1000 ft line. The ATIS instruction was unclr. The yellow line was faint and difficult to see. The controller was not helpful when asked. The chevrons appeared to be the first 1000 ft.
