Narrative:

My C-182 was cleared for takeoff on 9R at M6, 2200 ft remaining. Winds 330 degree at 8 knots. The 737 was rolling out/taxiing to the end after landing on 4R. I was cleared for takeoff. The roll was longer due to tailwind component. I broke ground with about 500 ft remaining (just passing the touchdown zone). The 737 was passing through the extended centerline of 9R as I went over it. It was under control with no evasive action but it was too close for comfort. I should have turned down the takeoff clearance until the air carrier Y passed the extended centerline. Factors included the busyness of the airport of course, and the controller's interest in smooth and fast traffic flow. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter was at ord because it's the closest airport where he was going on business. Pilot was familiar with ord because of previous operation there. Pilots wife was passenger and was the first to notice the B-737 ahead. At this point the pilot was unable to stop the takeoff. The wife's startle factor was high.

Title: C-182 PLT HAD A B-737 TAXI CROSS HIS TKOF DEP PATH AT ORD.

Narrative: MY C-182 WAS CLRED FOR TKOF ON 9R AT M6, 2200 FT REMAINING. WINDS 330 DEG AT 8 KNOTS. THE 737 WAS ROLLING OUT/TAXIING TO THE END AFTER LNDG ON 4R. I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF. THE ROLL WAS LONGER DUE TO TAILWIND COMPONENT. I BROKE GND WITH ABOUT 500 FT REMAINING (JUST PASSING THE TOUCHDOWN ZONE). THE 737 WAS PASSING THROUGH THE EXTENDED CENTERLINE OF 9R AS I WENT OVER IT. IT WAS UNDER CONTROL WITH NO EVASIVE ACTION BUT IT WAS TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT. I SHOULD HAVE TURNED DOWN THE TKOF CLRNC UNTIL THE ACR Y PASSED THE EXTENDED CENTERLINE. FACTORS INCLUDED THE BUSYNESS OF THE ARPT OF COURSE, AND THE CTLR'S INTEREST IN SMOOTH AND FAST TRAFFIC FLOW. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR WAS AT ORD BECAUSE IT'S THE CLOSEST ARPT WHERE HE WAS GOING ON BUSINESS. PLT WAS FAMILIAR WITH ORD BECAUSE OF PREVIOUS OP THERE. PLTS WIFE WAS PAX AND WAS THE FIRST TO NOTICE THE B-737 AHEAD. AT THIS POINT THE PLT WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE TKOF. THE WIFE'S STARTLE FACTOR WAS HIGH.
