Narrative:

Scattered clouds with 10+ mi visibility and wind nne at 12 KTS. Cleared for visual approach to runway 30L. Vref on 133 KIAS at flaps 42 degrees. Touchdown was 1500 ft down runway in a right crosswind. Reverse and rollout were normal. Between taxiway A7 and taxiway D, at approximately 60 KIAS, tower told us to exit right on taxiway C, which is short of the runway 4/22 intersection. First officer acknowledged 'wilco, right on taxiway C.' I applied firm brakes but speed was above a brisk walk and too fast to make a 90 degree right turn. Tower must have seen this coming and said 'air carrier xyz, stop.' I stopped approximately 70 ft short of the runway 4/22 intersection and saw a saab coming to a stop on runway 22 short of taxiway a. I asked the tower if there was a problem and the reply was negative. The real reason I'm reporting this is to alert other crews that during high density periods at msp, instructions like this are becoming common. Even though we are not authority/authorized to lahso at msp, you may get instructions without any explanation that are effectively doing the same thing. Simultaneous runway operations were also not mentioned and the chart has 2 runway incursion hot spots highlighted at that intersection, so heads up at msp.
