Narrative:

The first officer told ground we were with ATIS information xyz to taxi. (ATIS information xyz stated high winds above 20 KTS, lndgs and takeoffs on runway 28L&right.) at this time, ground controller cleared us to 'taxi to runway 28L via taxiway M, contact tower.' from our position, we crossed both runway 01L/right on taxiway M to proceed to runway 28L. No aircraft were on or taxiing to runway 01L or runway 01R. While in our taxi, we commented that he should have directed us to runway 28L via txwys M, left, F -- not just taxiway M and contact tower. While taxiing on taxiway left, tower asked us to verify we were taxiing to the runways 28. We affirmed that. He then asked again if we were taxiing to runway 28L via txwys left, F, and we affirmed that. It was then that we began to realize that the ground controller wanted us to taxi to runway 01L but did not state the proper runway. At this time on tower frequency, we heard aircraft being cleared for takeoff on runways 01L/right. Nothing was said to us by the tower about this situation and we departed normally from runway 28L. In retrospect, we should have asked ground for a full route clearance to runway 28L instead of the partial clearance given. It was obvious to us later that he had intended us to use runway 01L but misstated the runway. Even though we told ground we had ATIS information xyz, the ATIS had been changed or was in the process of being changed to include runways 01L/right and takeoff options. In the future, I will question all ground clrncs that do not take me to the intended runway or hold point.

Title: AN MLG CREW TAXIED AS INSTRUCTED TO THE WRONG RWY.

Narrative: THE FO TOLD GND WE WERE WITH ATIS INFO XYZ TO TAXI. (ATIS INFO XYZ STATED HIGH WINDS ABOVE 20 KTS, LNDGS AND TKOFS ON RWY 28L&R.) AT THIS TIME, GND CTLR CLRED US TO 'TAXI TO RWY 28L VIA TXWY M, CONTACT TWR.' FROM OUR POS, WE CROSSED BOTH RWY 01L/R ON TXWY M TO PROCEED TO RWY 28L. NO ACFT WERE ON OR TAXIING TO RWY 01L OR RWY 01R. WHILE IN OUR TAXI, WE COMMENTED THAT HE SHOULD HAVE DIRECTED US TO RWY 28L VIA TXWYS M, L, F -- NOT JUST TXWY M AND CONTACT TWR. WHILE TAXIING ON TXWY L, TWR ASKED US TO VERIFY WE WERE TAXIING TO THE RWYS 28. WE AFFIRMED THAT. HE THEN ASKED AGAIN IF WE WERE TAXIING TO RWY 28L VIA TXWYS L, F, AND WE AFFIRMED THAT. IT WAS THEN THAT WE BEGAN TO REALIZE THAT THE GND CTLR WANTED US TO TAXI TO RWY 01L BUT DID NOT STATE THE PROPER RWY. AT THIS TIME ON TWR FREQ, WE HEARD ACFT BEING CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWYS 01L/R. NOTHING WAS SAID TO US BY THE TWR ABOUT THIS SIT AND WE DEPARTED NORMALLY FROM RWY 28L. IN RETROSPECT, WE SHOULD HAVE ASKED GND FOR A FULL RTE CLRNC TO RWY 28L INSTEAD OF THE PARTIAL CLRNC GIVEN. IT WAS OBVIOUS TO US LATER THAT HE HAD INTENDED US TO USE RWY 01L BUT MISSTATED THE RWY. EVEN THOUGH WE TOLD GND WE HAD ATIS INFO XYZ, THE ATIS HAD BEEN CHANGED OR WAS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING CHANGED TO INCLUDE RWYS 01L/R AND TKOF OPTIONS. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL QUESTION ALL GND CLRNCS THAT DO NOT TAKE ME TO THE INTENDED RWY OR HOLD POINT.
