Narrative:

I was flying from gpm to tul, VFR, and flying under what I thought to be the outside ring of the dfw class B airspace. As I continued nebound, my DME and terminal chart idented that I was outside what I thought to be the outside ring of the class B airspace. I climbed to approximately 6000 ft MSL, prior to starting an immediate descent to 3500 ft MSL, to ensure I was under the outer ring which is 4000 ft MSL. I didn't open the VFR terminal chart completely to see the outer ring. The outside conditions were hot and the radio consistently had static, presumably from the antennas southeast of gpm.
