Narrative:

On downwind to runway 9R at ord, 7000 ft, 250 KTS, autoplt and altitude hold on, ATC issued a speed reduction to 200 KTS. We observed a 'stabilizer out of trim' light and noted the stabilizer was not trimming. Very shortly thereafter, before we could perform the irregular procedure, the airplane began to descend due to lack of elevator authority/authorized even though altitude hold was still on. By disconnecting autoplt and adding power, I was able to quickly return to assigned altitude and regain trim control. Altitude loss was approximately 250 ft. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated to the best of his knowledge the autoplt stabilizer trim actuator was replaced. The reporter aid the main electric trim and manual trim was operative. Callback conversation with reporter acn 514033 revealed the following information: the reporter stated that no report was received from maintenance on the positive autoplt stabilizer trim fix.

Title: A B727-200 ON DOWNWIND AT 7000 FT AUTOPLT AND ALT HOLD ENGAGED HAD 'STABILIZER OUT OF TRIM' WARNING LIGHT CAUSED BY A FAILED AUTOPLT STABILIZER ACTUATOR.

Narrative: ON DOWNWIND TO RWY 9R AT ORD, 7000 FT, 250 KTS, AUTOPLT AND ALT HOLD ON, ATC ISSUED A SPD REDUCTION TO 200 KTS. WE OBSERVED A 'STABILIZER OUT OF TRIM' LIGHT AND NOTED THE STABILIZER WAS NOT TRIMMING. VERY SHORTLY THEREAFTER, BEFORE WE COULD PERFORM THE IRREGULAR PROC, THE AIRPLANE BEGAN TO DSND DUE TO LACK OF ELEVATOR AUTH EVEN THOUGH ALT HOLD WAS STILL ON. BY DISCONNECTING AUTOPLT AND ADDING PWR, I WAS ABLE TO QUICKLY RETURN TO ASSIGNED ALT AND REGAIN TRIM CTL. ALT LOSS WAS APPROX 250 FT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED TO THE BEST OF HIS KNOWLEDGE THE AUTOPLT STABILIZER TRIM ACTUATOR WAS REPLACED. THE RPTR AID THE MAIN ELECTRIC TRIM AND MANUAL TRIM WAS OPERATIVE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR ACN 514033 REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THAT NO RPT WAS RECEIVED FROM MAINT ON THE POSITIVE AUTOPLT STABILIZER TRIM FIX.
