Narrative:
The aircraft was terminated for the evening and the captain had already left. The flight attendants notified me that there was a broken trash receptacle hinge/door in the aft lavatory. I advised the operations agent who told me that a mechanic was notified and on his way over to the airplane. I then made a logbook write-up of the discrepancy, and asked the operations agent to pass this fact along to the mechanic as well. I neglected to coordinate with dispatch or with duty control on this matter. I remember being told at some point in my past that this is necessary, but that night I did not think to do it. The next day I learned that the aircraft was operated unknowingly with the write-up still open. In the future, I will notify duty control -- always.
