Narrative:

On climb out, (about 7000 ft) ATC asked what our speed in the climb was going to be. We said we could do whatever he wanted. He asked us not to exceed 290 KTS. Out of 10000 ft we accelerated to 290 KTS. At this point, ATC told us that he wanted us to maintain 250 KTS, and to expect 290 KTS. We did not comprehend this from the initial instructions, we were given a vector. There was no traffic in the immediate area. Safety was never compromised. Shortly thereafter, we resumed normal speed.
