Narrative:

On descent to den, we were asked for maximum forward airspeed for spacing. We hit moderate turbulence and slowed approximately 40 KTS for 2-3 mins. Controller asked our speed and we advised we had slowed. He stated we should have told him we were slowing earlier so he could plan accordingly. I was PNF, conducting operational experience with a new first officer. I was distraction with seating passenger, flight attendant and picking up ATIS.
