Narrative:

Right after takeoff from cho airport on runway 4, we contacted richmond approach on 132.85, climbing through 4800 ft for 7000 ft on runway heading. Richmond gave us direct barin, climb and maintain 8000 ft. As we were climbing through 6700 ft, richmond approach told us we were told to maintain 5000 ft, descend and maintain to 5000 ft. We acknowledged and went back to 5000 ft without further incident. During this incident, my first officer and I confirmed we heard the instruction 'direct barin, climb and maintain 8000 ft,' and my response was 'direct barin, up to 8000 ft.' we also noticed approach was dealing, at that time, with a GA aircraft that apparently contributed to the miscom.
