Narrative:

Detroit approach vectored us onto a 030 degree heading after gloze intersection at 11000 ft MSL. About 10 mi northeast of airport, we were given clearance to 8000 ft MSL on the 030 degree heading. Approximately through 8500 ft MSL, the controller gave us a left turn to 300 degrees and down to 4000 ft MSL. The initial call was blocked, but I confirmed the clearance to 4000 ft MSL. The controller said that 4000 ft was correct and a left turn to 300 degrees was needed. We continued down and turned to 300 degrees. We noticed that we were extremely high for a base turn to runway 21L. Again, I asked approach about the heading. This time, he said maintain 7000 ft and that we now needed a 030 degree heading. We had already passed through 7000 ft and he cleared us to 6000 ft. We started the turn to 030 degrees. He said to maintain 300 degree heading to 6000 ft. They vectored us above and across the finals for runway 21L&right. We entered right downwind for runway 21R and were given a change to another detroit approach frequency. They vectored us for a landing on runway 21R without any more confusion.

Title: APCH CTLR ATTEMPTS A HIGH CLOSE-IN APCH AS AN SF-340 FLT CREW IS MISHANDLED FOR AN APCH TO RWY 21L AT DTW, MI.

Narrative: DETROIT APCH VECTORED US ONTO A 030 DEG HDG AFTER GLOZE INTXN AT 11000 FT MSL. ABOUT 10 MI NE OF ARPT, WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC TO 8000 FT MSL ON THE 030 DEG HDG. APPROX THROUGH 8500 FT MSL, THE CTLR GAVE US A L TURN TO 300 DEGS AND DOWN TO 4000 FT MSL. THE INITIAL CALL WAS BLOCKED, BUT I CONFIRMED THE CLRNC TO 4000 FT MSL. THE CTLR SAID THAT 4000 FT WAS CORRECT AND A L TURN TO 300 DEGS WAS NEEDED. WE CONTINUED DOWN AND TURNED TO 300 DEGS. WE NOTICED THAT WE WERE EXTREMELY HIGH FOR A BASE TURN TO RWY 21L. AGAIN, I ASKED APCH ABOUT THE HDG. THIS TIME, HE SAID MAINTAIN 7000 FT AND THAT WE NOW NEEDED A 030 DEG HDG. WE HAD ALREADY PASSED THROUGH 7000 FT AND HE CLRED US TO 6000 FT. WE STARTED THE TURN TO 030 DEGS. HE SAID TO MAINTAIN 300 DEG HDG TO 6000 FT. THEY VECTORED US ABOVE AND ACROSS THE FINALS FOR RWY 21L&R. WE ENTERED R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 21R AND WERE GIVEN A CHANGE TO ANOTHER DETROIT APCH FREQ. THEY VECTORED US FOR A LNDG ON RWY 21R WITHOUT ANY MORE CONFUSION.
