Narrative:

Flight abc from ewn to rdu. We were expecting visual approach runway 5R. After the approach brief and checklist, we were asked if we could see a B737 2 O'clock position, 7 mi. We saw a jet in that direction, but we were not aware of another jet in the same direction, further out. We called traffic in sight and were cleared for visual runway 5L behind him. As we turned, I noticed that the aircraft we were to follow didn't seem to be aligned with runway 5L. I called the approach controller to inquire about that. ATC was busy -- got no response. Noticed a target on my TCASII which appeared to be on left side. ATC came back to ask if we had the traffic to our left. At that point, I saw him we were flying parallel to each other. He was at least 1000 ft above me 7-8 O'clock position. We stayed visual the entire time and requested a go around. We got heading of 140 degrees and 2000 ft. Factors: TCASII, DME notamed OTS, sun still low on the horizon affecting visibility. Most of all, not being notified about the aircraft nearest our position by the ATC controller.

Title: A JETSTREAM 3200 PIC INITIALLY FOLLOWS THE WRONG ACFT FOR A VISUAL APCH TOWARDS RWY 5R AT RDU, NC.

Narrative: FLT ABC FROM EWN TO RDU. WE WERE EXPECTING VISUAL APCH RWY 5R. AFTER THE APCH BRIEF AND CHKLIST, WE WERE ASKED IF WE COULD SEE A B737 2 O'CLOCK POS, 7 MI. WE SAW A JET IN THAT DIRECTION, BUT WE WERE NOT AWARE OF ANOTHER JET IN THE SAME DIRECTION, FURTHER OUT. WE CALLED TFC IN SIGHT AND WERE CLRED FOR VISUAL RWY 5L BEHIND HIM. AS WE TURNED, I NOTICED THAT THE ACFT WE WERE TO FOLLOW DIDN'T SEEM TO BE ALIGNED WITH RWY 5L. I CALLED THE APCH CTLR TO INQUIRE ABOUT THAT. ATC WAS BUSY -- GOT NO RESPONSE. NOTICED A TARGET ON MY TCASII WHICH APPEARED TO BE ON L SIDE. ATC CAME BACK TO ASK IF WE HAD THE TFC TO OUR L. AT THAT POINT, I SAW HIM WE WERE FLYING PARALLEL TO EACH OTHER. HE WAS AT LEAST 1000 FT ABOVE ME 7-8 O'CLOCK POS. WE STAYED VISUAL THE ENTIRE TIME AND REQUESTED A GAR. WE GOT HDG OF 140 DEGS AND 2000 FT. FACTORS: TCASII, DME NOTAMED OTS, SUN STILL LOW ON THE HORIZON AFFECTING VISIBILITY. MOST OF ALL, NOT BEING NOTIFIED ABOUT THE ACFT NEAREST OUR POS BY THE ATC CTLR.
