Narrative:

Location: east of civet. We were cleared direct civet for the civet 4 arrival and assigned maximum forward speed (320 KTS or better). I was at 325 KTS, FL240. We were then cleared to FL180 within approximately 20-25 mi of civet. ATC then reclred us to the mitts 1 arrival and runway 24R to comply with altitude restrs. Somewhere just prior to or after civet ATC had us reduce to 280 KTS. With idle descent and speed brakes deployed. I was unable to meet the civet 17000 ft, 14000 ft restr. Despite my best efforts, we crossed civet at FL180. Due to the high airspeed, I had no other options to expedite the descent to meet the crossing altitude. Supplemental information from acn 509024: I became involved in the FMC routing and completing the descent checklist.

Title: A B737 FLC IS UNABLE TO MAKE THE CIVET XING ALT WHEN TRYING TO SLOW AND DSND E OF CIVET, CA.

Narrative: LOCATION: E OF CIVET. WE WERE CLRED DIRECT CIVET FOR THE CIVET 4 ARR AND ASSIGNED MAX FORWARD SPD (320 KTS OR BETTER). I WAS AT 325 KTS, FL240. WE WERE THEN CLRED TO FL180 WITHIN APPROX 20-25 MI OF CIVET. ATC THEN RECLRED US TO THE MITTS 1 ARR AND RWY 24R TO COMPLY WITH ALT RESTRS. SOMEWHERE JUST PRIOR TO OR AFTER CIVET ATC HAD US REDUCE TO 280 KTS. WITH IDLE DSCNT AND SPD BRAKES DEPLOYED. I WAS UNABLE TO MEET THE CIVET 17000 FT, 14000 FT RESTR. DESPITE MY BEST EFFORTS, WE CROSSED CIVET AT FL180. DUE TO THE HIGH AIRSPD, I HAD NO OTHER OPTIONS TO EXPEDITE THE DSCNT TO MEET THE XING ALT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 509024: I BECAME INVOLVED IN THE FMC ROUTING AND COMPLETING THE DSCNT CHKLIST.
