Narrative:

During preflight for return to iad, discovered right nose tire was low. Contacted maintenance control via cell phone. An air carrier X mechanic checked pressure -- found to be at 25 psi. Maintenance control said to fill to 44 psi and that no logbook entry was required. In hindsight, should have written up in logbook requiring a mechanic to enter his corrective action. Supplemental information from acn 508900: while on the telephone with maintenance, an air carrier X ramp maintenance personnel offered to inflate the low tire to normal. We confirmed the required psi while on the telephone with maintenance and mutually agreed that a maintenance write-up would not be required. Postflt inspection of the nose gear tire checked out normal. Poor ramp coordination at pit between operations, the flight crew, and maintenance caused the confusion of the questionable write-up.

Title: JS41 CREW FOUND AN UNDERINFLATED TIRE ON PREFLT INSPECTION.

Narrative: DURING PREFLT FOR RETURN TO IAD, DISCOVERED R NOSE TIRE WAS LOW. CONTACTED MAINT CTL VIA CELL PHONE. AN ACR X MECH CHKED PRESSURE -- FOUND TO BE AT 25 PSI. MAINT CTL SAID TO FILL TO 44 PSI AND THAT NO LOGBOOK ENTRY WAS REQUIRED. IN HINDSIGHT, SHOULD HAVE WRITTEN UP IN LOGBOOK REQUIRING A MECH TO ENTER HIS CORRECTIVE ACTION. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 508900: WHILE ON THE TELEPHONE WITH MAINT, AN ACR X RAMP MAINT PERSONNEL OFFERED TO INFLATE THE LOW TIRE TO NORMAL. WE CONFIRMED THE REQUIRED PSI WHILE ON THE TELEPHONE WITH MAINT AND MUTUALLY AGREED THAT A MAINT WRITE-UP WOULD NOT BE REQUIRED. POSTFLT INSPECTION OF THE NOSE GEAR TIRE CHKED OUT NORMAL. POOR RAMP COORD AT PIT BTWN OPS, THE FLC, AND MAINT CAUSED THE CONFUSION OF THE QUESTIONABLE WRITE-UP.
