Narrative:

Received takeoff clearance from bowman tower. On climb out, tower advised of traffic to my left. I did not see the traffic and told tower. Tower advised traffic was not a factor. I asked if I could turn left, on course, which was a north departure. Tower cleared me for the left turn, which was 170 degrees. I thought my clearance from the tower allowed me into controled airspace and continued the climb. Tower informed me I was to stay below 2200 ft, clear of class D airspace. I descended to 2000 ft, and contacted louisville departure. It would be good if tower would say 'stay at or below 2200 ft' in the takeoff clearance.

I ASKED IF I COULD TURN L, ON COURSE, WHICH WAS A N DEP. TWR CLRED ME FOR THE L TURN, WHICH WAS 170 DEGS. I THOUGHT MY CLRNC FROM THE TWR ALLOWED ME INTO CTLED AIRSPACE AND CONTINUED THE CLB. TWR INFORMED ME I WAS TO STAY BELOW 2200 FT, CLR OF CLASS D AIRSPACE. I DSNDED TO 2000 FT, AND CONTACTED LOUISVILLE DEP.
