Narrative:

Ambiguous clearance and language barrier contributed to captain misunderstanding taxi clearance. We were cleared to taxi and hold short of runway 34. First officer understood and read back taxi clearance but was heads down running checklists while captain taxied out on runway (which he thought we were cleared to do). Before first officer could catch error, tower/ground controller called and informed us of error. No conflict occurred on runway.
