Narrative:

En route vrb to srq cruising at 6000 ft, ZMA cleared us to cross 25 DME east of srq at and maintain 2500 ft. That's what I heard and read back. I put 2500 ft in the altitude preselect as a reference, which is how I handled the next assigned altitude. Mins later, I said 'center, aircraft X out of 6000 ft for 2500 ft.' on the descent, going through 2800 ft, center said 'aircraft X, say altitude.' I said '2800 ft for 2500 ft.' center said 'last assigned was 4000 ft, tell you what, climb to 3000 ft and contact st petersburg approach.' I said 'thank you.' he came back with 'don't worry about it.' after landing and thinking about what happened, I'm not 100% sure -- was it mis-stated or mis-heard? How can I know for sure? To help prevent this problem, I have already ordered a new intercom with recording capabilities replacing the one I have without recording. This will allow me to hear all clrncs a second time and should correct this kind of problem.

Title: AFTER PREVIOUSLY RECEIVING AND READING BACK A DSCNT CLRNC WITH A XING RESTR, A PLT IS CONFUSED AS TO WHY ATC QUESTIONS HIS ALT DURING THE DSCNT CLAIMING THE CLRNC WAS NOT ISSUED.

Narrative: ENRTE VRB TO SRQ CRUISING AT 6000 FT, ZMA CLRED US TO CROSS 25 DME E OF SRQ AT AND MAINTAIN 2500 FT. THAT'S WHAT I HEARD AND READ BACK. I PUT 2500 FT IN THE ALT PRESELECT AS A REF, WHICH IS HOW I HANDLED THE NEXT ASSIGNED ALT. MINS LATER, I SAID 'CTR, ACFT X OUT OF 6000 FT FOR 2500 FT.' ON THE DSCNT, GOING THROUGH 2800 FT, CTR SAID 'ACFT X, SAY ALT.' I SAID '2800 FT FOR 2500 FT.' CTR SAID 'LAST ASSIGNED WAS 4000 FT, TELL YOU WHAT, CLB TO 3000 FT AND CONTACT ST PETERSBURG APCH.' I SAID 'THANK YOU.' HE CAME BACK WITH 'DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT.' AFTER LNDG AND THINKING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED, I'M NOT 100% SURE -- WAS IT MIS-STATED OR MIS-HEARD? HOW CAN I KNOW FOR SURE? TO HELP PREVENT THIS PROB, I HAVE ALREADY ORDERED A NEW INTERCOM WITH RECORDING CAPABILITIES REPLACING THE ONE I HAVE WITHOUT RECORDING. THIS WILL ALLOW ME TO HEAR ALL CLRNCS A SECOND TIME AND SHOULD CORRECT THIS KIND OF PROB.
