Narrative:

Descending into ZMA, aircraft X was cleared from FL370 to FL270. I was flying the aircraft and listening to the ATIS. The first officer who was talking to ZMA acknowledged the clearance and set FL270 in the altitude select. Upon descending through FL280, ZMA called and said 'aircraft X, maintain FL270. You were assigned to maintain FL290.' we were then switched to another frequency. Both the first officer and I had thought we were cleared to FL270 but apparently we were only cleared to FL290.
