Narrative:

While at gate in bna, air carrier X mechanic called maintenance control and dispatch on the conference line and notified them of an illuminated 'first officer pitot' light. Maintenance control told air carrier X mechanic to defer item as ok to continue as per MEL. The air carrier X mechanic handed the phone to me. Dispatch on the phone at this time, he briefed me on the WX of bna, en route WX, and fll forecast WX in which was no visible moisture or icing conditions. Dispatch release was verbally amended and maintenance mechanic deferred logbook as ok to continue per MEL. I assumed maintenance control and dispatch actually referred to the -700 MEL 10-5. I guess they were going by memory of the other series aircraft that do not have the day VMC restr. It is important that the correct aircraft series MEL is referenced by all persons responsible.
