Narrative:

Upon takeoff from syr, ny, en route to teb, nj, tower at syr advised nose gear was not retracted. I stayed under control of tower. I cycled the gear. On the second attempt, gear appeared to retract. Did not return to airport (syr) and did not continue to teb. I felt with the snow and ice on the runway and txwys it may have frozen or stuck for a moment. Rather than continue the trip to new york (teb), I returned the airplane to roc (its home base) as a precautionary measure. In roc, I wrote the event in the discrepancy log and grounded the airplane until it could be checked by a mechanic.
