Narrative:

Departed from lax day VFR on laxx 3 departure. SID was not in the FMC, so set it up manually to turn from 250 degree heading to 230 degree heading, upon crossing the santa monica radial. Tuned up santa monica, however, on departure it was intermittent -- we apparently missed or passed the radial. Controller turned us to 200 degrees, then 180 degrees. Nothing was said by controller (departure control) and there were no conflicts. We tried to ask about the VOR, but the radio was cluttered. A minor situation, and we should have loaded the radial manually in the FMC.
