Narrative:

With first officer flying, we were in deep discussion about previous leg's screw-up. We were descending on J174 sbound to cross zizzi intersection at 16000 ft. We had 100-110 KT crosswind and the first officer just let it blow him east of course as he just couldn't believe how much correction it was taking for the strong winds. Not wanting to over correct, he just kept getting further off centerline. My radial/radio was set for the turn at zizzi intersection down the ATR 085 degree radial to ATR so I didn't notice how much he was drifting. That, combined with the parallax angle from my seat to his HSI and a dark cockpit, didn't help. ATC inquired if we were centered and I told him we were correcting immediately. This old, old B737 has no FMC -- it should be mandatory in modern airliners. In the future, we will put distrs aside till on the ground, but we were still shook up about previous error on previous leg. In regards to the limited navigation capacity, I will certainly tighten up my definition of 'centered on the airway' and stop trying to be mr nice guy in the cockpit thinking the first officer will get it back ok.

Title: B737-200 CREW HAD TRACK DEV IN ZNY CLASS A AND CLASS E AIRSPACES.

Narrative: WITH FO FLYING, WE WERE IN DEEP DISCUSSION ABOUT PREVIOUS LEG'S SCREW-UP. WE WERE DSNDING ON J174 SBOUND TO CROSS ZIZZI INTXN AT 16000 FT. WE HAD 100-110 KT XWIND AND THE FO JUST LET IT BLOW HIM E OF COURSE AS HE JUST COULDN'T BELIEVE HOW MUCH CORRECTION IT WAS TAKING FOR THE STRONG WINDS. NOT WANTING TO OVER CORRECT, HE JUST KEPT GETTING FURTHER OFF CTRLINE. MY RADIAL/RADIO WAS SET FOR THE TURN AT ZIZZI INTXN DOWN THE ATR 085 DEG RADIAL TO ATR SO I DIDN'T NOTICE HOW MUCH HE WAS DRIFTING. THAT, COMBINED WITH THE PARALLAX ANGLE FROM MY SEAT TO HIS HSI AND A DARK COCKPIT, DIDN'T HELP. ATC INQUIRED IF WE WERE CTRED AND I TOLD HIM WE WERE CORRECTING IMMEDIATELY. THIS OLD, OLD B737 HAS NO FMC -- IT SHOULD BE MANDATORY IN MODERN AIRLINERS. IN THE FUTURE, WE WILL PUT DISTRS ASIDE TILL ON THE GND, BUT WE WERE STILL SHOOK UP ABOUT PREVIOUS ERROR ON PREVIOUS LEG. IN REGARDS TO THE LIMITED NAV CAPACITY, I WILL CERTAINLY TIGHTEN UP MY DEFINITION OF 'CTRED ON THE AIRWAY' AND STOP TRYING TO BE MR NICE GUY IN THE COCKPIT THINKING THE FO WILL GET IT BACK OK.
