Narrative:

Piper cheyenne PA31T, IFR laporte (ppo) to grand rapids (grr). Before takeoff, called south bend on cell phone for void time and clearance. Set altimeter to field elevation of 820 ft. Clearance called for direct knox VOR and climb to 3000 ft. Did that, radar contact shortly after liftoff, then climbed to 5000 ft. Controller asked what my altitude was and I responded 5000 ft, then I asked the controller what the altimeter setting was. He responded 30.43. When I dialed that in (it was 30.18) I was at 5600 ft. I told him I set it to the field elevation. He called chicago on the landline and chicago said I was at 5000 ft. Hard to believe that big a pressure difference in 30 mi, but the WX was down at laporte, falpo (vpz) 15 NM west was reporting visibility 1/2 mi and ceiling 100 ft. Most have been a pocket of low pressure. Next time will get setting from controling controller (sbn). Tops were 2200 ft clear above.

Title: PLT OF A PA31 OVERSHOT INTERMEDIATE DEP ALT DUE TO THE DIFFERENCE BTWN THE ARPT FIELD ELEVATION ALTIMETER SETTING AND THAT RECORDED BY THE DEP CTL FACILITY.

Narrative: PIPER CHEYENNE PA31T, IFR LAPORTE (PPO) TO GRAND RAPIDS (GRR). BEFORE TKOF, CALLED SOUTH BEND ON CELL PHONE FOR VOID TIME AND CLRNC. SET ALTIMETER TO FIELD ELEVATION OF 820 FT. CLRNC CALLED FOR DIRECT KNOX VOR AND CLB TO 3000 FT. DID THAT, RADAR CONTACT SHORTLY AFTER LIFTOFF, THEN CLBED TO 5000 FT. CTLR ASKED WHAT MY ALT WAS AND I RESPONDED 5000 FT, THEN I ASKED THE CTLR WHAT THE ALTIMETER SETTING WAS. HE RESPONDED 30.43. WHEN I DIALED THAT IN (IT WAS 30.18) I WAS AT 5600 FT. I TOLD HIM I SET IT TO THE FIELD ELEVATION. HE CALLED CHICAGO ON THE LANDLINE AND CHICAGO SAID I WAS AT 5000 FT. HARD TO BELIEVE THAT BIG A PRESSURE DIFFERENCE IN 30 MI, BUT THE WX WAS DOWN AT LAPORTE, FALPO (VPZ) 15 NM W WAS RPTING VISIBILITY 1/2 MI AND CEILING 100 FT. MOST HAVE BEEN A POCKET OF LOW PRESSURE. NEXT TIME WILL GET SETTING FROM CTLING CTLR (SBN). TOPS WERE 2200 FT CLR ABOVE.
