Narrative:

Under the above conditions, I was cleared straight-in to runway 4L. On short final, a high wing tail dragger converged toward me in a banking right turn from my 3 O'clock position and descending. I executed a left turn and go around at the tower's instructions, then landed uneventfully on runway 4L. Aircraft #2 did not deviate course and landed without incident. The conflict resulted because I had lined up on runway 4R rather than runway 4L from about 5 mi out, mistaking the left of 2 highly visible recently black-topped surfaces as the runways, rather than runway 4R with an adjacent taxiway. Runway 4L and all the other txwys and ramps are subdued and non-contrasting viewed from the air. The 2 aircraft were on separate tower frequencys and neither was advised of the other's presence in the pattern.

Title: MEYERS 200 PLT EXPERIENCES AN NMAC WITH A TAIL DRAGGER AFTER HE PERFORMS AN APCH TO RWY 4R, THE WRONG RWY, AT CHD, AZ.

Narrative: UNDER THE ABOVE CONDITIONS, I WAS CLRED STRAIGHT-IN TO RWY 4L. ON SHORT FINAL, A HIGH WING TAIL DRAGGER CONVERGED TOWARD ME IN A BANKING R TURN FROM MY 3 O'CLOCK POS AND DSNDING. I EXECUTED A L TURN AND GAR AT THE TWR'S INSTRUCTIONS, THEN LANDED UNEVENTFULLY ON RWY 4L. ACFT #2 DID NOT DEVIATE COURSE AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE CONFLICT RESULTED BECAUSE I HAD LINED UP ON RWY 4R RATHER THAN RWY 4L FROM ABOUT 5 MI OUT, MISTAKING THE L OF 2 HIGHLY VISIBLE RECENTLY BLACK-TOPPED SURFACES AS THE RWYS, RATHER THAN RWY 4R WITH AN ADJACENT TXWY. RWY 4L AND ALL THE OTHER TXWYS AND RAMPS ARE SUBDUED AND NON-CONTRASTING VIEWED FROM THE AIR. THE 2 ACFT WERE ON SEPARATE TWR FREQS AND NEITHER WAS ADVISED OF THE OTHER'S PRESENCE IN THE PATTERN.
