Narrative:

After receiving taxi clearance 'call sign' proceeded to active runway. Owner was in right seat. He was at the time operating radio and having difficulty with intercom. Tower advised position and hold which we did. During this time I thought I heard fly runway heading and responded 'call sign' on the roll. Tower said nothing until 400 ft that I was not cleared to take off. Upon landing in tlh I telephoned back with information and told no problem, etc. Reviewed procedures, etc. Key here is owner in aircraft not fully knowing how to work radio, etc.
