Narrative:

Requested pushback on taxiway a for start. When after start completed and ground crew cleared off, we requested taxi instructions. Ground controller said 'cleared to runway 25R, hold short of runway 25R at taxiway F.' as we approached taxiway F, switched to lax tower and monitored frequency. Heard tower clear an aircraft to land. As we were in the turn on taxiway F to hold short line at runway 25L, tower told us to stop! We acknowledged and complied immediately! Crew discussion on taxi clearance followed: taxi to and hold short of, at, or on F for runway 25R? After some discussion and examination of airport diagram, consensus was hold short of taxiway F for runway 25R. Confusing clearance in conjunction with runway hold short clearance.
