Narrative:

Inbound to bos on the norwich two arrival we past over orw and were instructed to cross the pvd VOR at 11000 ft. The first officer was the PNF and answered the call and set the standby altimeter to the local setting. The flight attendant had come into the cockpit to bring some refreshments. I did not hear the altimeter setting. The altimeter was misset by 40 inches. I leveled the aircraft at what I thought was 11000 ft. The first officer was on communication #2 getting ATIS. A few mi later center called and told us to maintain 11000 ft. I responded we were at 11000 ft and to verify the altimeter setting. I then discovered our mistake. In the future, I will make sure the ATIS is received earlier in the descent allowing a xchk.
