Narrative:

First officer was on radio as we taxied to runway. He was given a clearance to taxi into position and hold. I did not hear the clearance due to static and bleed over. I asked the first officer what the clearance was and he stated 'cleared for takeoff.' we proceeded with takeoff. Out of approximately 800 ft AGL the controller advised us that the clearance was position and hold. However, there was no conflict and no further action would be taken. In hindsight I should have asked the first officer to verify the clearance with the tower prior to takeoff.

Title: FLC OF A DEHAVILLAND, DASH-8, TKOF WITHOUT CLRNC WHEN THEIR CLRNC FOR POS AND HOLD ONLY.

Narrative: FO WAS ON RADIO AS WE TAXIED TO RWY. HE WAS GIVEN A CLRNC TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD. I DID NOT HEAR THE CLRNC DUE TO STATIC AND BLEED OVER. I ASKED THE FO WHAT THE CLRNC WAS AND HE STATED 'CLRED FOR TKOF.' WE PROCEEDED WITH TKOF. OUT OF APPROX 800 FT AGL THE CTLR ADVISED US THAT THE CLRNC WAS POS AND HOLD. HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO CONFLICT AND NO FURTHER ACTION WOULD BE TAKEN. IN HINDSIGHT I SHOULD HAVE ASKED THE FO TO VERIFY THE CLRNC WITH THE TWR PRIOR TO TKOF.
