Narrative:

After I landed on runway 26 and cleared the runway, I was cleared to cross runway 31 to taxi to the pilot shop on southeast corner of airport. I read back taxi clearance and started to taxi. Just as I crossed the hold line and was looking out for landing traffic, ground told me to hold. I stopped about 8 ft past the hold line. After I stopped, I saw traffic on short final for runway 31. I was talking with my passenger when I got cleared to cross runway 31, and didn't look before starting to move, but the fact remains that I was cleared to cross a runway with landing traffic. If the ground controller hadn't told me to hold after I started to taxi, there could easily have been a collision. This taught me to be more careful about looking when crossing any runway, even when I have a clearance to cross. I usually look as I start moving, but should probably look before starting to move, to avoid stopping just past the hold line like I did this time.

Title: A PVT INST RATED PLT, TAXIING A C172 AT LNS, FAILS TO PROMPTLY FOLLOW ATC INSTRUCTIONS, RESULTING IN A RWY INCURSION.

Narrative: AFTER I LANDED ON RWY 26 AND CLRED THE RWY, I WAS CLRED TO CROSS RWY 31 TO TAXI TO THE PLT SHOP ON SE CORNER OF ARPT. I READ BACK TAXI CLRNC AND STARTED TO TAXI. JUST AS I CROSSED THE HOLD LINE AND WAS LOOKING OUT FOR LNDG TFC, GND TOLD ME TO HOLD. I STOPPED ABOUT 8 FT PAST THE HOLD LINE. AFTER I STOPPED, I SAW TFC ON SHORT FINAL FOR RWY 31. I WAS TALKING WITH MY PAX WHEN I GOT CLRED TO CROSS RWY 31, AND DIDN'T LOOK BEFORE STARTING TO MOVE, BUT THE FACT REMAINS THAT I WAS CLRED TO CROSS A RWY WITH LNDG TFC. IF THE GND CTLR HADN'T TOLD ME TO HOLD AFTER I STARTED TO TAXI, THERE COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN A COLLISION. THIS TAUGHT ME TO BE MORE CAREFUL ABOUT LOOKING WHEN XING ANY RWY, EVEN WHEN I HAVE A CLRNC TO CROSS. I USUALLY LOOK AS I START MOVING, BUT SHOULD PROBABLY LOOK BEFORE STARTING TO MOVE, TO AVOID STOPPING JUST PAST THE HOLD LINE LIKE I DID THIS TIME.
