After clearing runway 14R at ord, got taxi instructions. I was looking for next taxiway when I looked forward to see hold short markings. Slammed on brakes, tower said, 'you missed your taxiway.' he said, 'turn left to gate.' called tower superintendent on phone. He said, 'no problem.' good lesson: keep first officer with me till we get close to ramp.

Narrative: AFTER CLRING RWY 14R AT ORD, GOT TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. I WAS LOOKING FOR NEXT TXWY WHEN I LOOKED FORWARD TO SEE HOLD SHORT MARKINGS. SLAMMED ON BRAKES, TWR SAID, 'YOU MISSED YOUR TXWY.' HE SAID, 'TURN L TO GATE.' CALLED TWR SUPERINTENDENT ON PHONE. HE SAID, 'NO PROB.' GOOD LESSON: KEEP FO WITH ME TILL WE GET CLOSE TO RAMP.
