Narrative:

Called for takeoff from intersection J on runway 17L. Tower instructed me to hold short for landing traffic. An air force T37 was on final, and after it touched down, the controller instructed me to position and hold. Intersection J is about 1/2 way down the 9000 ft runway, and I would have taxied to the centerline about the time the T37 passed. I held short, informed the controller of the error once the T37 passed, and eventually completed an uneventful departure. The following monday I spoke to the ATC facility supervisor who said the controller had already discussed the incident with him and remedial training was already completed. We both agreed, no runway incursion occurred as I didn't cross the hold short line. Additional stuff: 1) clearance, ground, tower and approach were all 1 controller. 2) it was late. 3) T37 was UHF and I was VHF.
