Narrative:

Departing lax-oak, socal departure gave us a heading of 360 degrees to cross the gmn departure. Shortly thereafter, we were handed off to another socal frequency. I checked in with socal departure and looked at the HSI. The copilot was flying and I told the controller we were headed direct to gmn. The controller said we were to be on the heading 360 degrees. The 360 degree heading was to cross the 142 degree radial of gmn, not proceed direct to gmn. I stated direct gmn to clear up the confusion. The confusion was on our part. Somehow the copilot thought gmn and then to fly the departure from gorman. I should have caught the error sooner than I did.

Narrative: DEPARTING LAX-OAK, SOCAL DEP GAVE US A HDG OF 360 DEGS TO CROSS THE GMN DEP. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, WE WERE HANDED OFF TO ANOTHER SOCAL FREQ. I CHKED IN WITH SOCAL DEP AND LOOKED AT THE HSI. THE COPLT WAS FLYING AND I TOLD THE CTLR WE WERE HEADED DIRECT TO GMN. THE CTLR SAID WE WERE TO BE ON THE HDG 360 DEGS. THE 360 DEG HDG WAS TO CROSS THE 142 DEG RADIAL OF GMN, NOT PROCEED DIRECT TO GMN. I STATED DIRECT GMN TO CLR UP THE CONFUSION. THE CONFUSION WAS ON OUR PART. SOMEHOW THE COPLT THOUGHT GMN AND THEN TO FLY THE DEP FROM GORMAN. I SHOULD HAVE CAUGHT THE ERROR SOONER THAN I DID.
