Narrative:

Departed runway 36R using standard power. At approximately 1500 ft AGL, tail compartment temperature high light illuminated. Performed red box items and emergency procedures checklist. Declared emergency with departure control. Returned to dfw. Tail compartment temperature high light went out prior to landing. Made overweight landing (137500 pounds). Arff saw no signs of fire or smoke. Taxied to gate with arff following. Maintenance found augmentation valve had failed.
