Narrative:

First officer flying aircraft, clearance to cross holey intersection at 11000 ft. I set altitude in FMS and gave VNAV to first officer for a reference. I then confirmed altitude crossing with first officer and picked up current ATIS at ewr. Back with first officer and I noticed altitude crossing restr was not going to be made. I advised first officer and ATC. We missed altitude by about 2000 ft. First officer was new and just out of IOE. Was not used to descent rates in jet or ATC environment in new york airspace (inexperience as a whole). I should have been more vigilant in assuring proper descent rate before attending to other duties.
