Narrative:

I was giving IOE to a new copilot and I had gotten a heads up from another line check pilot. The warning was that the copilot didn't have good situational awareness. We were on the departure from jfk and were trying to level at 12000 ft. The copilot tried to engage the autoplt at the same time that we were given direct to a VOR. The warning that the autoplt had disengaged kept going off. I was trying to get this to work along with trying to make sure that we didn't overshoot 12000 ft. Somehow the direct was overlooked. When center called us to remind us, they also gave us an altitude change. Now we were concerned about the heading change and although we put the altitude in the reminder window, we did not start a climb. Center called traffic at our old altitude and told us to climb immediately. I took control, started a climb. We got a TA about the traffic that went out within a few seconds. I steadied the aircraft on the correct heading and climbed to the new altitude. There was a lot of talk about what was going on and had trouble with a frequency change. We finally got it on the correct frequency and resumed the flight. I have no excuses. It was my fault since I was the lca. I was telling the copilot to accomplish these clrncs but did not follow them up. I expected the copilot to react and he wasn't. I think that I should have been quicker to catch some of the omissions by the copilot. He should have tuned in the VOR and turned and I let the autoplt bother me enough that I didn't follow him up on it. He had never flown jets or been involved in part 121 operations. He was very much behind the aircraft. I expected a certain level of competence and he was not showing it. I think that he could have been better prepared if he had had an aircraft trainer. Simulators just do not help someone who has never flown the real aircraft in real sits and lndgs. The so was on the line for 2 months. He had had much experience with a regional and could have been more help. I had asked him to watch our operation and speak up but heard nothing.

Title: B727 IOE CHK AIRMAN HAD AN ALTDEV AND TRACK DEV BECAUSE OF NEW FO COMPETENCY.

Narrative: I WAS GIVING IOE TO A NEW COPLT AND I HAD GOTTEN A HEADS UP FROM ANOTHER LINE CHK PLT. THE WARNING WAS THAT THE COPLT DIDN'T HAVE GOOD SITUATIONAL AWARENESS. WE WERE ON THE DEP FROM JFK AND WERE TRYING TO LEVEL AT 12000 FT. THE COPLT TRIED TO ENGAGE THE AUTOPLT AT THE SAME TIME THAT WE WERE GIVEN DIRECT TO A VOR. THE WARNING THAT THE AUTOPLT HAD DISENGAGED KEPT GOING OFF. I WAS TRYING TO GET THIS TO WORK ALONG WITH TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT WE DIDN'T OVERSHOOT 12000 FT. SOMEHOW THE DIRECT WAS OVERLOOKED. WHEN CTR CALLED US TO REMIND US, THEY ALSO GAVE US AN ALT CHANGE. NOW WE WERE CONCERNED ABOUT THE HDG CHANGE AND ALTHOUGH WE PUT THE ALT IN THE REMINDER WINDOW, WE DID NOT START A CLB. CTR CALLED TFC AT OUR OLD ALT AND TOLD US TO CLB IMMEDIATELY. I TOOK CTL, STARTED A CLB. WE GOT A TA ABOUT THE TFC THAT WENT OUT WITHIN A FEW SECONDS. I STEADIED THE ACFT ON THE CORRECT HDG AND CLBED TO THE NEW ALT. THERE WAS A LOT OF TALK ABOUT WHAT WAS GOING ON AND HAD TROUBLE WITH A FREQ CHANGE. WE FINALLY GOT IT ON THE CORRECT FREQ AND RESUMED THE FLT. I HAVE NO EXCUSES. IT WAS MY FAULT SINCE I WAS THE LCA. I WAS TELLING THE COPLT TO ACCOMPLISH THESE CLRNCS BUT DID NOT FOLLOW THEM UP. I EXPECTED THE COPLT TO REACT AND HE WASN'T. I THINK THAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN QUICKER TO CATCH SOME OF THE OMISSIONS BY THE COPLT. HE SHOULD HAVE TUNED IN THE VOR AND TURNED AND I LET THE AUTOPLT BOTHER ME ENOUGH THAT I DIDN'T FOLLOW HIM UP ON IT. HE HAD NEVER FLOWN JETS OR BEEN INVOLVED IN PART 121 OPS. HE WAS VERY MUCH BEHIND THE ACFT. I EXPECTED A CERTAIN LEVEL OF COMPETENCE AND HE WAS NOT SHOWING IT. I THINK THAT HE COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER PREPARED IF HE HAD HAD AN ACFT TRAINER. SIMULATORS JUST DO NOT HELP SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER FLOWN THE REAL ACFT IN REAL SITS AND LNDGS. THE SO WAS ON THE LINE FOR 2 MONTHS. HE HAD HAD MUCH EXPERIENCE WITH A REGIONAL AND COULD HAVE BEEN MORE HELP. I HAD ASKED HIM TO WATCH OUR OP AND SPEAK UP BUT HEARD NOTHING.
