Narrative:
On apr/mon/00, I worked aircraft xyz which had a drop dead MEL on the flight deck voice recorder. We did not have a DC9 voice recorder in ZZZ so maintenance control instructed me to install a matched set of MD80 flight deck voice recorder and control panels, which I did. Maintenance control told me the MD80 parts were listed as replacement parts under the master ipc. When looking in parts catalog under replacement for company part #XXX the stores comments states: if XXX is not in stock you can use rcn wxvx and xzxz as a matched set. I made a good faith effort to dispatch the aircraft in a safe manner. After consulting with maintenance control and following their instructions to replace the cvr and control head as a matched set, I had no reason to doubt maintenance control or company's published material listed under master catalog. Later in day engineering authority/authorized #abc was issued.
