Narrative:

Called traffic to the BE36. The reply was unreadable. I asked BE36 to 'say again,' and he said, 'I have him on TCASII.' 2 things wrong with that. First, I didn't know he had TCASII. Second, 'I got him' makes me think 'in sight.' this is a common reply to traffic calls these days and should be addressed. There is no operational advantage to saying 'I've got him on TCASII.' this is the risk of a controller misunderstanding the reply and issuing a visual separation clearance.

Title: ZTL CTLR CONCERNED WITH BE36 COMMENT 'HAVE HIM ON TCASII.'

Narrative: CALLED TFC TO THE BE36. THE REPLY WAS UNREADABLE. I ASKED BE36 TO 'SAY AGAIN,' AND HE SAID, 'I HAVE HIM ON TCASII.' 2 THINGS WRONG WITH THAT. FIRST, I DIDN'T KNOW HE HAD TCASII. SECOND, 'I GOT HIM' MAKES ME THINK 'IN SIGHT.' THIS IS A COMMON REPLY TO TFC CALLS THESE DAYS AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. THERE IS NO OPERATIONAL ADVANTAGE TO SAYING 'I'VE GOT HIM ON TCASII.' THIS IS THE RISK OF A CTLR MISUNDERSTANDING THE REPLY AND ISSUING A VISUAL SEPARATION CLRNC.
