Narrative:

During a visual approach to lny airport, approximately 6 NM west of lny VOR, 2500 ft MSL, we initiated a climb in response to a TCASII RA, for opposite direction traffic. ZHN advised us of traffic 10 NM east of us wbound. When we were 15 NM west of lny VOR we advised ATC that we did not have traffic in sight. We were given a traffic alert at 10 NM west of lny VOR, by ATC. We finally saw the opposite direction traffic when our TCASII RA told us to climb. We advised ATC that traffic was in sight and that we were climbing to avoid the traffic. Our TCASII last showed the traffic 100 ft below us. After initiating our climb, we passed over the traffic 300-400 ft separation. Once clear of the conflict, we continued approach and landing at lny airport. Since we were on a visual approach, ATC should have provided separation with radar vectors and/or altitude restrs. If ATC could not do this they should have allowed us a frequency change to lny CTAF so we could ask other aircraft of their position.

Title: ACR INBOUND TO LHY, HI, HAS AN NMAC IN THE CLASS E AIRSPACE ON A VISUAL APCH. ATC ISSUED AN ADVISORY.

Narrative: DURING A VISUAL APCH TO LNY ARPT, APPROX 6 NM W OF LNY VOR, 2500 FT MSL, WE INITIATED A CLB IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII RA, FOR OPPOSITE DIRECTION TFC. ZHN ADVISED US OF TFC 10 NM E OF US WBOUND. WHEN WE WERE 15 NM W OF LNY VOR WE ADVISED ATC THAT WE DID NOT HAVE TFC IN SIGHT. WE WERE GIVEN A TFC ALERT AT 10 NM W OF LNY VOR, BY ATC. WE FINALLY SAW THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION TFC WHEN OUR TCASII RA TOLD US TO CLB. WE ADVISED ATC THAT TFC WAS IN SIGHT AND THAT WE WERE CLBING TO AVOID THE TFC. OUR TCASII LAST SHOWED THE TFC 100 FT BELOW US. AFTER INITIATING OUR CLB, WE PASSED OVER THE TFC 300-400 FT SEPARATION. ONCE CLR OF THE CONFLICT, WE CONTINUED APCH AND LNDG AT LNY ARPT. SINCE WE WERE ON A VISUAL APCH, ATC SHOULD HAVE PROVIDED SEPARATION WITH RADAR VECTORS AND/OR ALT RESTRS. IF ATC COULD NOT DO THIS THEY SHOULD HAVE ALLOWED US A FREQ CHANGE TO LNY CTAF SO WE COULD ASK OTHER ACFT OF THEIR POS.
