Narrative:
We were told to contact north ground at K12. As we continued northbound, I just happened to notice at my 9 O'clock position a DC9 exiting the runway on a high speed taxiway that intersected with ours. I slowed down and he slowed down. Thinking tower had told him to give way to us, and not hearing anything contrary from ground control, I continued, at which time I noticed first officer had switched to north ground prematurely. I don't know if south ground was trying to get a hold of us at that point. Nothing was mentioned to us by ATC.
