Narrative:

The airplane we were to fly arrived in geg from msp. The flight attendant logbook had a write-up that the life vest was missing from xa seat in row xa. I called maintenance control and they called a contract maintenance person who MEL'ed the seat and signed off the logbook. He signed off the seat xa was inoperative and was to put tape that said 'inoperative -- do not use' on the seat. He gave me the logbook back immediately before pushback. Once in-flight, I learned that a passenger was sitting in xa during boarding, so the mechanic put the tape on seat xb (an empty seat) and took the life vest from xb and moved it to xa. The problem is now the logbook does not match the inoperative seat. When we got to msp a new life vest was installed.

Narrative: THE AIRPLANE WE WERE TO FLY ARRIVED IN GEG FROM MSP. THE FLT ATTENDANT LOGBOOK HAD A WRITE-UP THAT THE LIFE VEST WAS MISSING FROM XA SEAT IN ROW XA. I CALLED MAINT CTL AND THEY CALLED A CONTRACT MAINT PERSON WHO MEL'ED THE SEAT AND SIGNED OFF THE LOGBOOK. HE SIGNED OFF THE SEAT XA WAS INOP AND WAS TO PUT TAPE THAT SAID 'INOP -- DO NOT USE' ON THE SEAT. HE GAVE ME THE LOGBOOK BACK IMMEDIATELY BEFORE PUSHBACK. ONCE INFLT, I LEARNED THAT A PAX WAS SITTING IN XA DURING BOARDING, SO THE MECH PUT THE TAPE ON SEAT XB (AN EMPTY SEAT) AND TOOK THE LIFE VEST FROM XB AND MOVED IT TO XA. THE PROB IS NOW THE LOGBOOK DOES NOT MATCH THE INOP SEAT. WHEN WE GOT TO MSP A NEW LIFE VEST WAS INSTALLED.
